Bad Google reviews: what you can remove, and how to reply to the rest
Google only removes reviews that break its rules, like fake reviews, spam, offensive language or reviews from people who were never customers. A review that is negative but honest stays. For those, a calm reply is your best tool, because the next homeowner reads it.
Reviews Google may remove
- Fake reviews, or reviews from someone who was never your customer
- Reviews from a competitor or an ex-employee with a conflict of interest
- Spam, ads, or reviews about a different business
- Hate speech, threats, harassment or personal information
How to report a review
- Open your Google Business Profile and go to Reviews.
- Find the review, open the three-dot menu, and choose "Report review."
- Pick the reason that matches. Google reviews it and emails you the result.
- If it's refused and you're sure it breaks the rules, you can appeal from the same place.
Be wary of any company that promises to remove honest bad reviews for a fee. Google decides, not them.
How to reply to a bad review
Hi Karen, I'm sorry the cleanup didn't meet your standards. That's not how we want any job to end. Please email me at [email] so I can make it right.
- Reply within a day or two.
- Never argue, even if you're right. You can be right and still look bad.
- Don't share private details about the job.
- Offer one clear next step, then take it offline.
Why good replies matter more than you think
A calm reply shows the next homeowner how you treat people when something goes wrong. That's exactly what they want to know before they hire a roofer. And the more good reviews you collect, the less one bad review moves your rating.
